A is either , one that enters into the of its , like “animal” relative to human and horse; or , one that is otherwise, like “laughing” relative to human.

Sentence 11

The commentary Ḥusām al-Dīn al-Kātī

The is divided into and . For either it enters into the of its , or it does not. If it enters into the reality of its particulars, it is essential, like “animal” relative to human: human is the whole reality of Zayd, ʿAmr and Bakr, and animal enters into it, since human is composed of animal and rational. The same holds relative to horse. If it does not enter into the reality of its particulars but lies outside that reality, it is accidental, like “laughing” relative to human. It is accidental, not entering into the reality of Zayd, ʿAmr and Bakr, which is human; for, as said before, human is composed of animal and rational only, so it is settled that laughing lies outside it. On this account the itself is not essential but counts among the accidentals, since it differs from the essential as explained here, and whatever differs from it is accidental. It is sometimes said instead that the essential is what is not accidental, that is, not outside [the reality]; on that account the quiddity itself is essential. It cannot be objected that “essential” means “related to the ”, so that the quiddity cannot be essential, since a thing would then be related to itself, which is impossible. For we reply: this naming, that is, calling the quiddity “essential”, is not a matter of ordinary language, such that this difficulty would follow; it is a technical usage, so the objection does not arise.

Sharḥ Īsāghūjī · p. 20

This begins the explanation of the five . Know that the is either a , a or a . For if it is said in answer to “what is it?” by what is purely shared, that is, with nothing specific at all, it is the genus, like “animal” relative to human and horse. If one asks about human and horse together, “what are they?”, the answer about both is “animal”, because it is the whole they share. But if one asks about each of human and horse separately, it cannot serve as the answer about either of them, because it is not the whole quiddity of either. If you ask about human alone and say “what is human?”, the answer is “rational animal”, because that is its whole quiddity; likewise, if you ask about horse alone, the answer is “neighing animal”, because that is its whole quiddity. The genus is described as “a universal said of many that differ in their , in answer to ‘what is it?’”, said essentially. His word “universal” is superfluous and adds nothing. “Said” is a genus [within the ] that covers and the five universals. “Of many” excludes all particulars, since, as said before, a particular is said of one thing only. “That differ in their realities” excludes the species, which is said of many that agree in their realities. “In answer to ‘what is it?’” excludes the remaining universals, namely differentia, and . If the essential is said in answer to “what is it?” by what is shared and specific together, it is the species, like “human” relative to its individuals, namely Zayd, ʿAmr, Bakr and so on. If one asks about Zayd, ʿAmr, Bakr and the others together, “what are they?”, the answer is “human”, because that is the whole quiddity they share among themselves; and if one asks about Zayd alone, the answer is again “human”, because that is the whole quiddity specific to him. So it is settled that the species is what is said in answer to “what is it?” by what is shared and specific together. It is described as “a universal said of many that differ in number, not in reality, in answer to ‘what is it?’”. His word “universal” is superfluous, as said before. “Said” is a genus [within the definition] that covers universal and particular. “Of many” excludes the particular. “That differ in number, not in reality” excludes the genus. For the species is said of many that agree in reality and differ in number, that is, by accidents and individuations; the genus, by contrast, is said of many that differ both in reality and in number. He says “differ in number” because its individuals differ by accidents and individuations. “In answer to ‘what is it?’” excludes the three remaining universals already mentioned. If the essential is not said in answer to “what is it?” but in answer to “which thing is it in its ?”, and it is what is said in answer to “which thing is it in its essence?” that “separates a thing from what shares its genus”, like “rational” relative to human, then it is the differentia. Had he said in the definition “or in existence” as well, it would have been more comprehensive, so as to include the differentiae of a quiddity composed of two coextensive things, or of several coextensive things. Unless, that is, one says that he made do with “genus” on the grounds that a quiddity cannot be composed of two or more coextensive things. Someone may say: In that case he ought not to have mentioned the genus in the definition of the differentia at all, since there would then be no point in mentioning it: it contributes nothing either to or to exclusion, so mentioning it is idle. We reply: he mentioned the genus here so as to signify what is intended by . That is why he put the word “genus” in the definition. That, namely what separates a thing from what shares its genus, is like “rational” relative to human: it separates human from what shares its genus, namely animal, such as horse, mule, cow and the rest. For if one asks about human, “which thing is it in its essence?”, the answer is that it is rational, since asking “which thing is it in its essence?” seeks what separates a thing from others, and whatever separates a thing from others can serve as the answer. Rational separates human from others, so it can serve as the answer. The differentia is described as “a universal said of a thing in answer to ‘which thing is it in its essence?’”. His word “universal” is superfluous. “Said of a thing” is a genus [within the definition] that covers the five universals. “In answer to ‘which thing is it?’” excludes the species, the genus and the common accident. For the genus and the species this is clear, since they are said in answer to “what is it?”, not in answer to “which thing is it?”; the common accident is not said in answer at all. “In its essence”, that is, in its substance, excludes the proprium: although the proprium does separate a thing, it does so not in its substance and essence but in its accidents.

3 questions on what the commentary explains. With 6 out of 10 or more (two stars) the next lesson opens.

  1. Question 1

If the essential is defined as what enters into the reality of its particulars, where does al-Kātī place the quiddity itself, for example “human” relative to Zayd?

  2. Question 2

Why, according to al-Kātī, is “animal” the answer to “what are they?” asked of human and horse together, but not to “what is human?” asked of human alone?

  3. Question 3

In the description of the differentia, what does al-Kātī say the words “in its essence” exclude?
