And if a proof is made of a connective or a disjunctive, it is called an exceptive syllogism (qiyās istithnāʾī). An example with a connective: “whenever this thing is a man, it is an animal; but it is a man, so it is an animal; but it is not an animal, so it is not a man.” An example with a real disjunctive: “this number is either even or odd; but it is even, so it is not odd; but it is odd, so it is not even; but it is not even, so it is odd; but it is not odd, so it is even.” And God knows best. Here ends the Ṣughrā.
Arabische vertaling
De les
A proof made of or is called the (qiyās istithnāʾī), because its second begins with “but” (lākin), the word of exception.
With a : “whenever this thing is a man, it is an animal; but it is a man, so it is an animal”. Or: “… but it is not an animal, so it is not a man”.
With a real the book gives four ways: “this number is either even or odd; but it is even, so it is not odd”; “but it is odd, so it is not even”; “but it is not even, so it is odd”; “but it is not odd, so it is even”. Affirming one part yields the denial of the other, and denying one part yields the other. That is why the real disjunctive allows the most exceptions.

Vraag 1
“This number is either even or odd; but it is not even…” What follows?
In a real disjunctive, denying one part yields the other: not even, so odd.
Vraag 2
What makes a syllogism exceptive (istithnāʾī) rather than conjunctive?
The exceptive syllogism uses a conjunctive or disjunctive proposition and a second premise of exception (“but …”).
Vraag 3
“Whenever this thing is a man, it is an animal; but it is not an animal…” What follows?
Denying what follows denies what it follows from: not an animal, so not a man.
