Hüseyin Sarıoğlu

Turkish historian of Islamic philosophy who made the first critical edition of the Īsāghūjī, with a Turkish translation and study (1998; revised 2016).

Life

Hüseyin Sarıoğlu is a Turkish professor of Islamic philosophy, a student of Mahmut Kaya, whose research covers Ibn Rushd, al-Ghazālī’s critique of philosophy, the early reception of philosophy in Islam and the logic textbooks of the post-classical period. Much of his work is devoted to al-Abharī.

In 1998 he published Ebherî, Îsâgûcî – Mantığa Giriş (İz Yayıncılık, Istanbul), a critical Arabic text with a Turkish translation and study, based on the three oldest manuscripts he could identify. A revised second edition, with corrections to both the Arabic text and the translation (preface dated Edirne 2015), appeared in 2016 from the Turkish Academy of Sciences (TÜBA) in Ankara as volume 3 of its series on the Turkish-Islamic scientific heritage. In 2001 he published a critical edition and study of al-Abharī’s larger work Kashf al-ḥaqāʾiq fī taḥrīr al-daqāʾiq, and he wrote the entry on al-Abharī in the Biographical Encyclopedia of Astronomers (Springer, 2007).

Reception

His 1998 edition is cited by the TDV İslâm Ansiklopedisi as the modern critical edition of the Īsāghūjī, and Persian scholarship lists his Turkish version among the translations of the work.
