بُرْهَانُ الدِّينِ بْنُ كَمَالِ الدِّينِ البُلْغَارِيّ

Burhān al-Dīn al-Bulghārī

Burhān al-Dīn b. Kamāl al-Dīn al-Bulghārī

Author of al-Fawāʾid (or al-Farāʾid) al-Burhāniyya, a gloss on al-Fanārī’s commentary that TDV counts, with Qul Aḥmad’s, among the important glosses on it.

Life

No biography of Burhān al-Dīn is available in the reference works consulted; even his dates are unknown. Manuscript catalogues give his full name as Burhān al-Dīn b. Kamāl al-Dīn b. Ḥumayd al-Bulghārī. A copy of his gloss in Princeton was made in 1061/1651, so he must have written before that date; the Qalamos manuscript database likewise places his activity before 1067 (1656–57), and Ḥājjī Khalīfa (d. 1067/1657) already lists the work.

Besides his gloss on al-Fanārī, the Qalamos database lists a gloss by him on the opening part of Quṭb al-Dīn al-Rāzī’s on al-Risāla al-Shamsiyya, another textbook.

Uncertain or disputed

  • His dates: only ‘before 1061/1651’ can be inferred from a dated copy.
  • The title: TDV and Ḥājjī Khalīfa have al-Fawāʾid al-Burhāniyya; the Princeton and German catalogues have al-Farāʾid al-Burhāniyya fī taḥqīq al-Fawāʾid al-Fanāriyya. Ahmet Kayacık calls it el-Fevaidi’l-Bulgariyye.
  • The sources consulted say nothing about his origin or the meaning of the nisba al-Bulghārī.
