The matn

The is a statement that signifies the of a thing. When it is composed of the thing's and proximate , like “rational animal” for human, it is the complete essential definition.

Sentence 15

The incomplete is composed of the thing's and its , like “rational body” for human.

Sentence 16

The complete is composed of the thing's and the that necessarily belong to it, like “laughing animal” in defining human;

Sentence 17

and the incomplete is composed of attributes that, taken together, belong to one only, as when we say in defining human: it walks on two feet, has broad nails, bare skin and an upright stature, and laughs by nature.

Sentence 18

The commentary Ḥusām al-Dīn al-Kātī

[that leads to what is sought] is of two kinds: one is the (qawl shāriḥ), the other the (ḥujja). For if it is a , with no judgment considered in it, that leads to a conception sought, it is the defining statement; and if it is [knowledge] with a judgment considered in it that leads to an sought, it is the argument. Once you know this, we say: among the technical terms of mentioned is the defining statement. This term is more general, covering both the and the . The essential definition is “a statement that signifies the of a thing”. His words “a statement that signifies” are a [within the definition] that covers the and the descriptive definition; “the quiddity of a thing” excludes the descriptive definition, as we shall explain. This is the definition of the essential definition. It has been said that the essential definition cannot itself be defined, lest an follow. We reply: we do not grant that a regress follows, because the essential definition of essential definition is essential definition itself, just as the existence of existence is existence itself. The essential definition is divided into two kinds, complete and incomplete. The complete essential definition is the one composed of the thing's genus and proximate , like “rational animal” relative to human: if you ask “what is human?”, the answer is “rational animal”, and that is a complete essential definition. It is an essential definition (ḥadd) because ḥadd in language means prevention, and this statement, since it contains the essentials, prevents anything else from entering it. It is complete because the essentials are mentioned in it in full. The incomplete essential definition is the one composed of the genus and the proximate differentia, like “rational body” relative to human: if one asks about human, “what is it?”, and the answer is that it is a rational body, the essential definition is incomplete. It is an essential definition for the reason already given; it is incomplete because some of the essentials are not mentioned in it. The descriptive definition too is divided into two kinds, complete and incomplete. The complete descriptive definition is the one composed of the thing's proximate genus and the that necessarily belongs to it, like “laughing animal” in defining human. It is a descriptive definition (rasm) because the rasm of a house is its trace: since this definition is by an proprium, which is one of the thing's traces, it is a definition by a trace. It is complete because of its resemblance to the complete essential definition: in it the proximate genus is placed and restricted by something that belongs to the thing alone. The incomplete descriptive definition is the one composed of attributes that, taken together, though not each one singly, belong to one only, as when we say in defining human: “it walks on two feet, has broad nails, bare skin and an upright stature, and laughs by nature”. Taken together these accidental attributes belong to human and nothing else, unlike each of them singly, since some of them are found in other things too. It is a descriptive definition for the reason already given, that the inseparable proprium is one of the thing's traces, so this is a definition by a trace, which is what a rasm is. It is incomplete because some of the parts of the complete descriptive definition are not mentioned in it, so that it resembles the incomplete essential definition, just as the complete descriptive definition resembles the complete essential definition.
