al-Risāla al-Shamsiyya
Everything written on this book that we could trace, with editions and sources.
- editie al-Risāla al-Shamsiyya fī al-qawāʿid al-manṭiqiyya: copies and printed editions of the matn
Details en bronnen
The matn is the root of this catalogue. Manuscripts are very numerous (GAL I 612–613, S I 845; for Istanbul and Anatolia the Muʿjam al-makhṭūṭāt II 942–943 cited by TDV). Street counts about 120 lemmata, ‘just over 12,000 words in English translation’. TDV notes that no critical edition of the Shamsiyya or its commentaries existed when it wrote (2010).

Details en bronnen
The editors argue that the author of the Shamsiyya wrote this commentary on its difficult passages, which would make it the first commentary on the book; they rest the attribution on parallels with ʿAyn al-qawāʿid, Baḥr al-fawāʾid, Jāmiʿ al-daqāʾiq and Sharḥ Kashf al-asrār. The bio-bibliographical sources do not mention it.

Details en bronnen
The first commentary in the usual lists, by a pupil of al-Kātibī. Street notes a manuscript dated 1280, so it was written in al-Kātibī’s lifetime or soon after, and calls it ‘often critical of Kātibī’s project’.

Details en bronnen
The most read commentary on the Shamsiyya. Ḥājjī Khalīfa says it was written for the vizier Ghiyāth al-Dīn Muḥammad, son of Rashīd al-Dīn, ‘one of the viziers of Sultan Khudābanda’, and begins ‘inna abhā durarin tunẓam…’; Street dates its completion to 1329, but Penn holds a copy finished in 726/1326 (CAJS Rar Ms 154), which needs checking. GAL calls it ‘al-Quṭbī’ on part I, al-Taṣawwurāt. Not to be confused with Quṭb al-Dīn’s separate treatise on conception and assent (al-Risāla al-Quṭbiyya).

Details en bronnen
Ḥājjī Khalīfa: it begins ‘lā uḥṣī thanāʾan ʿalayka’; the author says that scholars had explained the part on conceptions but neglected the assents, and that he gathered what he had worked out in the lessons of his teacher Kamāl al-Dīn Ḥusayn al-Ardabīlī. PIPDI lists him both as a commentator on the Shamsiyya and as a glossator of the Taḥrīr; GAL mentions Persian ‘Ḥawāshī bar Taṣdīqāt-i Shamsiyya’ in Tehran.

Details en bronnen
Called the ‘small gloss’ (Persian kūchak, Turkish küçük) to distinguish it from al-Jurjānī’s major gloss on Quṭb al-Dīn’s commentary on the Maṭāliʿ. About three quarters of it treat conceptions (El-Rouayheb). Al-Jurjānī had read the Taḥrīr with Quṭb al-Dīn in Herat (TDV). Ḥājjī Khalīfa adds a completion date of 753, which cannot be right for al-Jurjānī (born 740/1340) and seems to repeat the date of al-Taftāzānī’s commentary.

Details en bronnen
Completed in Herat in 850/1446 and covering only the conceptions (El-Rouayheb). GAL says it was called the ‘black gloss’ because of its obscurity. Begins ‘naḥmaduka yā man anṭaqa lisāna ʿabdihi’ (Ḥājjī Khalīfa), who also records a gloss on it by Shujāʿ al-Dīn Ilyās al-Rūmī.

Details en bronnen
TDV and GAL ascribe it to Kara Dâvud of İzmit (d. 948/1541); Ḥājjī Khalīfa insists that the author was Mawlā Qara Dāwūd, a pupil of Saʿd al-Dīn al-Taftāzānī, and that the ascription to Dāwūd b. Kamāl al-Qūjawī is a mistake. Separate glosses on the conceptions and the assents ascribed to Dāwūd b. Kamāl may be the same author’s (TDV).

Ḥājjī Khalīfa lists a gloss on the commentary by al-Fanārī (citing al-Majdī), and Aynî says he commented on Quṭb al-Dīn’s commentary and glossed al-Jurjānī’s gloss. PIPDI hesitates between Shams al-Dīn al-Fanārī and his grandson Ḥasan Çelebi (d. 886/1481); GAL notes a supergloss on al-Fanārī’s work by Abū Bakr b. ʿAbd al-Wahhāb al-Ḥalabī.

Details en bronnen
GAL and PIPDI list it, with a long series of Indian superglosses, among the glosses on the Taḥrīr, and Robinson’s list of the Dars-i Niẓāmī describes ‘Risāla Mīr Zāhid’ as a gloss on Quṭb al-Dīn’s commentary on the Shamsiyya. TDV, however, says Mīr Zāhid’s gloss accompanies Quṭb al-Dīn’s separate Risāla fī al-taṣawwur wa-l-taṣdīq (al-Risāla al-Quṭbiyya). The two are probably confused; to be checked.
