The lesson
Before teaching the Sullam asks whether it may be studied at all, and gives three views. Ibn al-Ṣalāḥ and al-Nawawī forbade it; others said that it ought to be learnt; and the well-known, correct view is that it is permitted for someone of sound mind who is practised in the Qurʾān and the Sunna.
Commentators explain that the prohibition concerned the of the early translations, mixed with the doctrines of the philosophers; the logic that al-Akhḍarī teaches, purified of those doctrines and serving the religious sciences, is the kind that later scholars such as al-Ghazālī held to be a tool everyone should know. The condition in the third view matters: one should come to logic grounded in the Book and the Sunna, so that it guides to what is right and does not lead astray.
