شِهَابُ الدِّينِ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ سَلَامَةَ القَلْيُوبِيّ

al-Qalyūbī

Shihāb al-Dīn Aḥmad b. Aḥmad b. Salāma al-Qalyūbī

Shāfiʿī jurist of al-Azhar who, among many other works, wrote a gloss on Zakariyyā al-Anṣārī’s commentary on the Īsāghūjī.

Life

Abū l-ʿAbbās Shihāb al-Dīn al-Qalyūbī came from the village of Qalyūb near Cairo. He studied with Shams al-Dīn al-Ramlī and Nūr al-Dīn al-Ḥalabī, was recognised by his contemporaries as the authority of the Shāfiʿī school, and was nicknamed ‘the little Shāfiʿī’. He taught at al-Azhar; among his students were Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad al-Birmāwī and Aḥmad b. Muḥammad al-Bannāʾ. He died on 27 Shawwāl 1069 (18 July 1659).

His best-known work is his gloss on al-Maḥallī’s on al-Nawawī’s Minhāj al-ṭālibīn, printed together with the gloss of ʿAmīra al-Burullusī. He also wrote a popular collection of curious stories (al-Nawādir), a medical handbook, and many short works on astronomy and timekeeping, grammar and hadith.
