صَوْنُ المَنْطِقِ وَالكَلَامِ عَنْ فَنَّيِ المَنْطِقِ وَالكَلَامِ
Ṣawn al-manṭiq wa-l-kalām
al-Suyūṭī · d. 911/1505
Al-Suyūṭī first abridged Ibn Taymiyya's refutation of the logicians as Jahd al-qarīḥa fī tajrīd al-Naṣīḥa and then expanded that abridgement into this work against logic and kalām. It argues that a mujtahid does not need to know logic, gathers earlier scholars' statements against the two disciplines, and holds that kalām should have been built on the Qur'an's own rational proofs. It belongs with his fatwa against the study of logic (al-Qawl al-mushriq, 867–68/1463–64). It is the main late-medieval statement of the case against logic, useful for a student who wants to know the objections the logicians answered.
