al-Mirqāt

Separate prints of the matn: bare, with anonymous or compiled marginal notes ('Mirqāt muḥashshā'), or with a named gloss (the glossed prints are also listed under the gloss). The author names himself in the closing lines (wa-anā Muḥammad Faḍl Imām al-Khayrābādī) and calls the work 'some chapters on the science of the balance' (ʿiddat fuṣūl fī ʿilm al-mīzān). Brockelmann (GAL S III 1303) and the British Library catalogue (Ellis) give the title as al-Mirqāt al-mīzāniyya; most prints say al-Mirqāt or al-Mirqāt fī al-manṭiq. GAL records only this text and the Persian Hadiyya-yi Shāhjahāniyya, and knows no Arabic commentary. The death date differs: 5 Dhū al-Qaʿda 1243/1828 (Nuzhat al-khawāṭir; also the al-Aḥsāʾ edition, the Maktabat al-Madīna edition as one option, and Furber's blurb); 1244/1829 (TDV; the Lahore reprint, from a chronogram by Ghālib); 'd. 1827 or 1828' (Library of Congress heading); 1240 (Maktabat al-Bushrā title page and other Deobandi editions, probably wrong). The 1921 Hyderabad 'Mirqāt' that UW–Madison catalogues under the author is the Urdu translation (separate entry). Muʿjam al-maṭbūʿāt says the notes in the 1886 and 1888 prints were printed 'by the care of' the named men, while the British Library catalogue calls them their notes; see the entries for ʿAbd al-Majīd and Iʿjāz Aḥmad.

The main classical Arabic commentary, written for and named after Nawwāb Kalb ʿAlī Khān of Rampur. Later glosses (Sharaf Qādirī's al-Marḍāt, the Dawat-e-Islami al-Mishkāt) draw on it heavily; the Persian Hadiyya-yi Shāhjahāniyya found it too subtle for beginners. Nuzhat al-khawāṭir's entry on ʿAbd al-Ḥaqq does not name it, and TDV mentions it without edition details. The 2019 Amman edition is the first Arab-world edition; its editor announced it on 1 January 2019. Sources disagree on the first print (British Library: [Rampur, 1866]; Khairabadi Institute: 1333/1914) and on the Kanpur print (see editions). Khairabadi Institute wrongly calls ʿAbd al-Ḥaqq the author's son; TDV, Penn and al-Turkumānī make him the grandson (son of Faḍl-i Ḥaqq).

Barelwi (Ahl-i Sunnat) gloss, read in the Tanẓīm al-Madāris syllabus (Khāṣṣa, year 1). The Dār al-Malik editors say it relies above all on ʿAbd al-Ḥaqq's Sharḥ al-Mirqāt. Its preface defends the study of logic, citing Aḥmad Riḍā Khān. Death year from the 2022 title page. The MeccaBooks description of the 2024 reprint is unreliable: it calls al-Marḍāt a treatise by Faḍl-i Imām and confuses him with his son.

The first complete English translation found, printed with the Arabic text. The publisher's blurb says the text is taught in parts of North America, the UK and South Africa as well as in the subcontinent, and lists its contents: conception and assent, propositions, syllogistic figures, composite arguments, reductio, the five arts, and the closing 'eight headings' (al-ruʾūs al-thamāniya). The blurb gives the author's death as 1243.

Known only from the list 'Names of some commentaries and glosses on al-Mirqāt' in the Maktabat al-Madīna edition (p. xiii), where it is third after ʿAbd al-Ḥaqq's Sharḥ and al-Marḍāt. No copy or print found. The language is assumed from the Arabic title.

An edition made in al-Aḥsāʾ (eastern Arabia) by a student of Shaykh Yaḥyā b. Muḥammad b. Abī Bakr al-Mulla, head of al-Madrasa al-Sharʿiyya al-Ḥanafiyya there, with whom he read the matn. Finding no manuscript, he used an undated lithograph from Qurʾān Maḥall, Karachi, with Shērkōṭī's al-Mirʾāt in the margin. He modernised spelling and punctuation, supplied headings for the untitled chapters in square brackets, added notes selected from al-Mirʾāt (marked ḥ) and his own (marked ʿ), dropped the author's Persian words, and added a biography of the author (d. 1243). The only Arab-world work on al-Mirqāt found before the Amman edition of ʿAbd al-Ḥaqq's Sharḥ (2019).

Arabic gloss, still printed in the margins of the standard Deobandi editions in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, and the basis of the notes in the al-Aḥsāʾ edition (1428/2007), which was made from a Karachi lithograph with al-Mirʾāt. Its preface says the author found al-Mirqāt the most concise of matns and wrote a gloss to be read with it. It quotes the Persian Hadiyya-yi Shāhjahāniyya. The nisba is al-Shērkōṭī on the title pages; the digital text of Sarkis has 'al-Shērkōnī'. Its use outside South Asia: a Jordanian (ISBN 978-9923) edition of 2025 and a course in Texas.

A Persian (Dari) commentary for Afghan students in the Ḥaqqāniyya milieu. The imprint calls it a translation (tarjuma) by Inʿām Allāh Ḥabībī Samangānī, whose nisba points to Samangan in northern Afghanistan (the contact number is Afghan). The original by Zāhid ʿAzīzkhēl, presumably Pashto or Urdu, has not been found. Printed as 'Bi-ḥall al-ʿawīṣāt'; the hosting site reads 'Ḥall al-ʿawīṣāt'.

A Persian commentary for beginners; the title presumably honours Shāhjahān Begum of Bhopal. Al-Turkumānī, citing its preface, says the author found ʿAbd al-Ḥaqq's commentary too subtle for beginners and added notes heard from his teacher Ilāhī Bakhsh while reading al-Mirqāt with him. Sources differ on the author. The print and the Western catalogues name Sayyid ʿAlī Ḥasan Bhōpālī (GAL: 'ʿA. Ḥ. Bhopālī'). Nuzhat al-khawāṭir (8/1191) says that Ilāhī Bakhsh, tutor to the sons of Nawwāb Ṣiddīq Ḥasan Khān, wrote a Persian sharḥ of al-Mirqāt and ascribed it to Sayyid ʿAlī Ḥasan, i.e. Ṣiddīq Ḥasan Khān's son; Edwards's catalogue of Persian printed books, by contrast, keeps this ʿAlī Ḥasan Bhōpālī apart from Sayyid ʿAlī Ḥasan Khān b. Ṣiddīq Ḥasan Khān. Nuzhat's death year for Ilāhī Bakhsh ('1036', Mecca) is a textual error, so no date is given here. Shērkōṭī's al-Mirʾāt quotes 'the Persian commentary called Hadiyya-yi Shāhjahāniyya', and Taqwiyat al-Mirqāt cites a 'Shāhjahānī, ḥāshiya Mirqāt', probably the same work. It is the only commentary on al-Mirqāt in Brockelmann (GAL S III 1303).

The imprint gives Iftikhār ʿAlī as muʾallif and Abū Hilāl ʿAbd al-Khāliq (graduate of al-Jāmiʿa Imdād al-ʿUlūm al-Islāmiyya, Peshawar) as translator. It is thus a Pashto version of a commentary by Iftikhār ʿAlī whose original (probably Urdu) has not been identified; it may be Iftikhār Aḥmad's Tawḍīḥāt, but that is unverified. The hosting page is wrong: it names Faḍl-i Imām as the author and calls Mirqāt a gloss on Mullā Jalāl's Sharḥ al-Sullam.

An Urdu gloss whose title is a chronogram (ism tārīkhī) for 1430/2009, printed after the matn in 'Mirqāt Ashrafiyya'. The Dār al-Malik preface calls it an Urdu work, and the archive.org upload describes the volume as the matn 'with Urdu ḥāshiya at the end'. Not to be confused with Sharaf Qādirī's Arabic al-Marḍāt.

The British Library catalogue (Ellis, and the Gale record) describes it as 'edited, with marginal notes, by Maulavī Muḥammad ʿAbd al-Majīd'; Muʿjam al-maṭbūʿāt says only that it was printed with ḥawāshī by his care, so his authorship of the notes is not certain. A compilation of marginal notes 'from various sources' (Ellis), not an original gloss. Muʿjam al-maṭbūʿāt says the 1888 and 1904 prints were made by his care, without calling the notes his. Ellis lists the same Iʿjāz Aḥmad as editor of a Kāfiya with a Persian marginal commentary (1889).
