كِتَابُ الأَلْفَاظِ المُسْتَعْمَلَةِ فِي المَنْطِقِ

Kitāb al-Alfāẓ al-mustaʿmala fī al-manṭiq

al-Fārābī · d. 339/950

The Utterances Employed in Logic introduces the vocabulary a beginner needs before the Organon proper. It classifies Arabic words into nouns, verbs and particles from the logician's point of view, discusses the question words (what, which, whether) and the genus, species and differentia they bring to light, and gives al-Fārābī's most developed definition of the syllogism. It also sets out a three-step model of teaching: conception, assent and retention. It shows how al-Fārābī bridged Arabic grammar and Greek logic, a question that stays alive in every later discussion of the dalālāt.
