Bosnian Ḥanafī scholar and muftī of Mostar, author of ‘the new commentary’ on the Shamsiyya and of commentaries on the Īsāghūjī and the Tahdhīb.
Life
According to the TDV İslâm Ansiklopedisi, Muṣṭafā b. Yūsuf was born in Mostar in Herzegovina in 1061/1651. In his homeland he was known as Shaykh Yūyū (Šejh Jujo), and among Ottoman scholars as Mustafa-yı Mostârî. He studied first with his father Yūsuf Efendi and other scholars of Mostar, and in 1088/1677 went to Istanbul, where he studied for four years at the Ṣaḥn-i Thamān madrasas. After qualifying he taught in several Istanbul madrasas and for four years privately tutored ʿAbd Allāh, son of the statesman ʿAbd al-Raḥmān Pasha. In fifteen years in Istanbul he copied some sixty books for himself and wrote his first ten works; the Ottoman bibliophile Cârullah Veliyyüddin Efendi remembered him as a fellow student.
In 1104/1692 the people of Mostar chose him as their muftī after the death of Ḥasan Efendi, and he returned home, saying, in the TDV’s account, that he could smell mercy from the direction of Herzegovina. For the last fifteen years of his life he was muftī and taught at the Karađoz Bey madrasa and other schools, making Mostar the chief centre of learning in the region. He founded a library of his own books, which has since been dispersed to Sarajevo, Zagreb, Bratislava and elsewhere. He died on 15 Rabīʿ II 1119/16 July 1707 and was buried in Mostar, where a mausoleum was built over his grave in 1247/1831.
He wrote mostly commentaries and glosses on standard textbooks. In logic and disputation the TDV lists a commentary on the Īsāghūjī, the only one of his works printed so far (Istanbul 1316); a gloss on al-Fanārī’s commentary on the Īsāghūjī; ‘the new commentary’ on the Shamsiyya; Tawḍīḥ al-manṭiq wa-l-kalām on al-Taftāzānī’s Tahdhīb, his last work, written in 1118/1706; and several works on the etiquette of debate (ādāb al-baḥth). He also wrote on grammar, rhetoric, legal theory, inheritance and creed.
Uncertain or disputed
- Date of death: 15 Rabīʿ II 1119/16 July 1707 (TDV, which rejects 1110/1698 found in some sources); PIPDI gives 1101/1689, which the catalogue of the Shamsiyya section follows. 1101 cannot be right if, as the TDV says, he became muftī in 1104 and wrote his Tahdhīb commentary in 1118.
- PIPDI calls him al-Fāshilī al-Mustārī; the nisba al-Fāshilī is not explained in the sources consulted.
- The background page on the Shamsiyya commentaries gives his death as 1101/1689–90, following PIPDI; it should be corrected to 1119/1707 if the TDV is accepted.

Reception
His tomb in Mostar is still visited, and many later scholars of the town traced their teaching lineage to him (TDV).
His commentaries are listed among the later Ottoman commentaries on the Shamsiyya and the Tahdhīb; see ‘The commentaries on the Shamsiyya’.
