مَنْطِقُ المَشْرِقِيِّينَ
Manṭiq al-mashriqiyyīn
Ibn Sīnā · d. 428/1037
The Logic of the Easterners is the surviving logic section of Ibn Sīnā's 'Eastern' philosophy (al-Mashriqiyyūn), a work in which he set out his own views without following Aristotle's terminology or the exegetical problems of the Baghdad Aristotelians. Only parts survive; a fuller text was apparently lost when Isfahan was sacked in 1034. The logic fragment classifies predicative propositions afresh, by kinds such as necessary and temporal. Gutas has argued that the 'Eastern' philosophy was not mystical but a direct, unconstrained statement of his system, and the fragment is read today for evidence of Ibn Sīnā's independence from the Peripatetic school.
