al-Taqrīb li-ḥadd al-manṭiq

Ibn Ḥazm · d. 456/1064

The Approach to the Limits of Logic is the first book on logic by an Andalusian author, written to bring Aristotelian logic within reach of jurists through ordinary words and examples from fiqh and kalām. It follows the order of the Organon, from terms, the five universals and the categories through propositions, conversion and the syllogism to demonstration, rhetoric and poetics, often under Arabic names of Ibn Ḥazm's own. It reflects the Baghdad school of logic and Ibn Ḥazm's Ẓāhirī concerns; it rejects the fourth figure, and recent studies discuss its treatment of legal (deontic) necessity. It was read in al-Andalus and is an early example of the case that logic serves the religious sciences, a case al-Ghazālī later made with more lasting success.
