Menâru'l-envâr'ın Yeniden İnşası: Hülâsatü'l-efkâr (Delâlet Mefhumu Üzerinden Istılahî Bir Tahlil) (Reconstruction of Manār al-anwār: Khulāṣat al-afkār, a Terminological Analysis of the Concept of Dalāla)

Sümeyye Karaş (İslam Hukuku Araştırmaları Dergisi)

Studies Ibn Quṭlūbughā's Khulāṣat al-afkār, a reworking of al-Nasafī's Manār al-anwār, through its use of dalāla (signification). Later Ḥanafī uṣūl authors drew on grammar, rhetoric, logic and the art of debate (munāẓara) to tie words to meanings, and the article reads dalāla here as both a grammatical and a logical term. It argues that the Khulāṣa reconstructs the Manār, the base text of Nūr al-anwār.

Munāẓara and Islamic Traditions of Argument (chapter 41 of The Routledge Handbook of Argumentation Theory)

Rahmi Oruç; eds. Scott Aikin, John Casey, Katharina Stevens (Routledge)

A handbook chapter that questions the story in which argumentation studies begin in ancient Greece and decline into formal logic. It surveys Islamic argumentation and introduces munāẓara in three senses: an argumentation theory, a truth-seeking inquiry between disagreeing parties and an actual debate, arguing that Walton and Krabbe's dialogue types cannot capture it. The handbook carries a 2026 copyright.

Şerhu'l-Akâid Hâşiyelerinde Burhân-ı Tatbîkin Kapsamı Tartışmaları: Hayâlî, Kestelî, Ramazan Efendi (Debates on the Scope of the Proof by Correspondence in the Glosses on Sharḥ al-ʿAqāʾid)

Güvenç Şensoy (İslam Medeniyeti Araştırmaları Dergisi)

Examines how three Ottoman glossators of al-Taftāzānī's Sharḥ al-ʿAqāʾid tested burhān al-taṭbīq, the proof by correspondence used in kalām against an actually infinite series. Al-Khayālī weighs its strengths and weaknesses, al-Kastalī doubts that it works for individual cases, and Ramaḍān Efendi limits it to the external world. The gloss appears as a place of real argument about the validity of a proof.

Nahiv İlminin Doğuşu Hususunda Oryantalist Nazariyelerin Analizi (Analysis of Orientalist Theories Regarding the Emergence of Arabic Grammar)

Talip İçöz (Atatürk University); Van İlahiyat Dergisi 13/23

The article reviews the nineteenth-century claims, beginning with Albert Merx, that Greek models shaped Arabic grammar, and the later variants pointing to Syriac, Latin, Sanskrit or Persian influence. The author argues that Arabic grammar grew from the language's own internal dynamics. The question of Greek influence is the historical background of the grammar–logic debate.

    Sherif Salem (University Canada West)

A three-session tutorial at the 8th World School on Universal Logic (Cusco, 4–8 December 2025) on definition as the link between conception and demonstration. It reads Avicenna's account, Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī's objections and Naṣīr al-Dīn al-Ṭūsī's replies from primary sources — the background to the chapter on definition (al-qawl al-shāriḥ) in the madrasa primers.

An Islamic Legal Philosophy: Ibn ʿAbd al-Salām and the Ethical Turn in Islamic Law

Mariam Sheibani (Cambridge University Press, Cambridge Studies in Islamic Civilization)

A study of the Shāfiʿī jurist ʿIzz al-Dīn Ibn ʿAbd al-Salām (d. 660/1262) and his account of the law as purposive and coherent, built on human benefit (maṣlaḥa) and legal maxims (qawāʿid). It follows his formation in Ayyubid Damascus, the use of his ideas in reform in Damascus and Cairo, and their reception across the schools, in a period of legal theory the author finds understudied.

İsmail Gelenbevî'de Mantığın Konusu ve Mevzûu'l-Mantık Risalesi (The subject matter of logic in İsmail Gelenbevî and the treatise Mawḍūʿ al-manṭiq)

    Havva Kızılçardak Özdemir

A study of a two-page treatise attributed to the Ottoman logician Gelenbevî (d. 1791) on the old question of what logic is about: second intelligibles (the Avicennan view) or conception and assent (the view of Khūnajī and Taftāzānī). It places Gelenbevî with the 'later' scholars and is a good entry into a question raised at the very start of every logic textbook.

Vazʿ Teorisi ve Dilde Kesinlik Problemi: Fahreddîn er-Râzî'den Dil Felsefesine Uzanan Epistemik Bir İnceleme (The Theory of Waḍʿ and the Problem of Linguistic Certainty)

Merter Rahmi Telkenaroğlu and Hamza Özen (Nevşehir Hacı Bektaş Veli Üniversitesi), bilimname 54

Starting from Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī's fourfold account of waḍʿ in al-Maḥṣūl and the debate over whether language is revealed or conventional, the article asks how far words can yield certain knowledge. It then follows the question through al-Ījī, ʿAlī Qūshjī, Mollā Luṭfī and the Ottoman madrasa curriculum. The certainty of verbal evidence bears directly on what counts as a demonstrative premise in logic.

Rethinking Propositions Beyond Tautology: al-Suhrawardī on the Ontological Basis of Propositions

Zehra Oruk Akman (Muş Alparslan University), Ilahiyat Studies 16/1

An article on al-Suhrawardī's argument that statements of the form 'A is A' have no epistemic value, because subject and predicate must be distinct concepts with different roles. It shows how his Illuminationist metaphysics shapes his logic of the proposition (qaḍiyya) and compares him with medieval commentators.

Karâfî'nin Vaz‘ Teorisi ve Mahallî'nin Eleştirileri: Fıkıh Usulünde Kavramsal Bir Tartışma (al-Qarāfī's Theory of Waḍʿ and al-Maḥallī's Criticisms)

Şeyma Yeşilyayla, İslam Medeniyeti Araştırmaları Dergisi 10/1

The article examines al-Qarāfī's (d. 684/1285) division of coinage into linguistic, customary and legal kinds, and al-Maḥallī's (d. 864/1459) objection that linguistic and legal coinage do not differ in essence. It argues that al-Qarāfī's explanation of customary and legal coinage through frequency of use is original. Logic handbooks draw the same lines in their chapter on words, where a transferred term (manqūl) is customary or legal.

ʿAlī Qushjī's Philosophy of Language: On the Metaphysical Principle of Linguistic Existence

Abdullah Yıldırım (İstanbul Medeniyet Üniversitesi), Nazariyat 11/1

The article reads the waḍʿ section of ʿAlī Qūshjī's ʿUnqūd al-zawāhir as an inquiry into the foundations of language, in which coinage grounds lexicography and, through it, morphology, grammar and rhetoric. It connects the universal and particular sides of waḍʿ and shows how word and meaning take shape as signification. Signification (dalāla) is the point where this theory meets the opening chapter of logic.

Rational Force of Analogy/Qiyas in Law: Logic of Law in Islamic and Contemporary Legal Reasoning

Muhammed Komath (Ibn Haldun University), Informal Logic 45/3

Asks what gives legal analogy its rational force and answers with a logical justification, drawing mainly on al-Ghazālī's al-Mustaṣfā and his book on dialectic, al-Muntakhal fī al-jadal. It argues that al-Ghazālī's model of qiyās combines elements of Scott Brewer's abduction model and Douglas Walton's defeasible argument. Published in Informal Logic, it sets the Mustaṣfā's logic-based account of qiyās beside modern argumentation theory.

The article traces how balāgha drew on logic from al-Sakkākī and al-Qazwīnī to al-Taftāzānī, and lists the logical principles that al-Taftāzānī either took from logic or formulated himself in his Muṭawwal on the Talkhīṣ al-Miftāḥ. What is a Kalima, What is a Definition: The Relationship between Logic and Grammar in the Later Arabic Linguistic Tradition

Muhammed Volkan Yildiran Stodolsky; posted by ASIPT

The paper compares the definitions of kalima by al-Zamakhsharī, Ibn al-Ḥājib (Kāfiya) and Ibn Hishām (Qaṭr al-nadā), judged through Jāmī's al-Fawāʾid al-ḍiyāʾiyya. Ibn Hishām applies the logicians' strict standard of definition, with proximate genus, as taught in the Īsāghūjī; Jāmī and later glossators held that grammarians care more about distinguishing a term than about its essence.

(Re-)Forging the Science of Bayān: ʿAbd al-Qāhir al-Ǧurǧānī in the Early Twentieth Century

Mostafa Najafi (University of Lucerne); Journal of Arabic and Islamic Studies 23

The article studies how Muḥammad ʿAbduh in Egypt and Hellmut Ritter in Germany revived ʿAbd al-Qāhir al-Jurjānī's works on bayān in the early twentieth century, and argues that together they shaped the image of al-Jurjānī that still prevails. That image, the author holds, was formed in the long shadow of falsafa; ʿAbduh also promoted Ibn Sahlān al-Sāwī's logic, al-Baṣāʾir al-Naṣīriyya.
