شَرْحُ سُلَّمِ العُلُومِ

Sharḥ Sullam al-ʿulūm (Mullā Ḥasan)

Mullā Ḥasan · d. 1199/1784

A commentary on the first half of Sullam al-ʿulūm, the part on conceptions (taṣawwurāt), by Mullā Muḥammad Ḥasan of the Farangī Maḥall family of Lucknow; it is known in the madrasas as ‘Mullā Ḥasan’. Asad Q. Ahmed dates it to 1177/1763–64 and counts it, after Qāḍī Mubārak and Ḥamd Allāh, among the most glossed of the Sullam commentaries. The Kanpur lithograph of 1870 prints it with ʿAbd al-Ḥalīm al-Laknawī’s super-gloss al-Qawl al-aslam and ʿAbd al-Ḥayy al-Laknawī’s treatise Ḥall al-mughlaq on the problem of the ‘absolutely unknown’ (al-majhūl al-muṭlaq). With Ḥamd Allāh on the assents it formed the standard Indian course on the Sullam.
