البُرْهَانُ فِي عِلْمِ المَنْطِقِ وَفَنِّ المِيزَانِ

al-Burhān

al-Kalanbawī · d. 1205/1791

An independent handbook of logic by the Ottoman logician and mathematician Ismāʿīl al-Kalanbawī (Gelenbevî), which TDV counts among the rare works of classical logic composed in the eighteenth century. The author added his own gloss, Ḥāshiyat al-Burhān, and the two were printed together several times in Istanbul. It drew commentaries such as Ḥasan Ḥusnī al-Mawṣilī’s Tanwīr al-Burhān and Yūsuf Shukrī Kharpūtī’s Nāmūs al-īqān, an Ottoman Turkish translation with commentary by ʿAbd al-Nāfiʿ ʿIffet Efendi, and notes by Said Nursi. It is the work to read for logic as it was still being rethought in the late Ottoman madrasa.
