Ibn Sīnā · d. 428/1037

The logic of The Cure is Ibn Sīnā's most comprehensive treatment of the subject, written in the 1020s as the first part of his philosophical encyclopedia. It follows the extended Organon from the Madkhal (Isagoge) through the Categories, De interpretatione, the Syllogism (al-Qiyās) and Demonstration to dialectic, sophistics, rhetoric and poetics, but reworks the material in his own order and terms. Its Qiyās contains his modal and temporal analysis of propositions and the detailed theory of hypothetical (conditional) syllogisms that later logicians drew on. Later manuals such as the Shamsiyya and the Īsāghūjī descend from this Avicennan logic rather than from Aristotle directly.
