Reforming Shīʿī scholar of Najaf whose lectures became al-Manṭiq, the clear modern handbook that is now the first logic book of the Shīʿī ḥawza.
Life
Muḥammad Riḍā al-Muẓaffar was born in Najaf into a family of jurists, five months after the death of his father, the jurist Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Muẓaffar; he was raised by his elder brothers ʿAbd al-Nabī and Muḥammad Ḥasan. He entered the seminary of Najaf at about thirteen and read Arabic grammar and literature with Muḥammad Ṭāhā al-Ḥuwayzī, and law and legal theory with, among others, his brother Muḥammad Ḥasan al-Muẓaffar, Muḥammad Ḥusayn al-Nāʾīnī, Ḍiyāʾ al-Dīn al-ʿIrāqī and Muḥammad Ḥusayn al-Gharawī al-Iṣfahānī. (These details come from WikiShia, the only full biography consulted.)
He is known above all as a reformer of seminary teaching. He founded the society Muntadā al-Nashr, which the Iraqi government licensed in 1353/1934–35, to promote religious learning through publishing and schools; its college (1355/1936–37) taught law, exegesis, legal theory and philosophy, and its schools combined modern subjects with religious education. In 1376/1956–57 he founded the College of Jurisprudence (Kulliyyat al-Fiqh) in Najaf, which he headed and for whose courses he oversaw the writing of new textbooks.
His book grew out of these institutions. From 1357/1938–39 he lectured on logic at the Muntadā al-Nashr college, and the lectures became al-Manṭiq, written in a clearer and simpler style than the older handbooks. With his Uṣūl al-fiqh (written for the College of Jurisprudence) and ʿAqāʾid al-Imāmiyya it belongs to a set of textbooks that are still used in the seminaries. He died in Najaf in 1383/1964 and was buried near his brother Muḥammad Ḥasan.
Uncertain or disputed
- The biography rests mainly on WikiShia, a tertiary source; a teacher should check the dates and the list of teachers against an Arabic biography (for instance in the introduction to an edition of al-Manṭiq).
- The date of the first printing of al-Manṭiq, and whether it first appeared in parts, is not given in the sources consulted.

Reception
Roy Mottahedeh, describing the curriculum of the Najaf ḥawza, counts the addition of ‘the very popular work on ’ of al-Muẓaffar among its innovations; some students then go on to on the Shamsiyya.
In the present-day course of the Shīʿī seminaries al-Muẓaffar’s al-Manṭiq is read in the preliminary stage, before Quṭb al-Dīn al-Rāzī’s on the Shamsiyya (see ‘Kurdish madrasas and the Shīʿī ḥawza’).
