الشَّرْحُ الصَّغِيرُ عَلَى السُّلَّمِ

al-Sharḥ al-ṣaghīr ʿalā al-Sullam

al-Mallawī · d. 1181/1767

Aḥmad al-Mallawī wrote two commentaries on al-Akhḍarī’s Sullam, a large and a small one; according to Dār al-Iftāʾ al-Miṣriyya the small one was especially well received and for decades was a mainstay of teaching at al-Azhar and other institutions. It reached later readers above all through al-Ṣabbān’s gloss, with which it was printed at Būlāq. Al-Mallawī was a specialist in the harder parts of logic: he also versified the modal propositions and the mixed syllogisms (Naẓm al-mukhtalaṭāt) and wrote on the implications of conditional propositions. His small commentary is the base text of the Egyptian line of Sullam commentaries that runs through al-Ṣabbān.
