كِتَابُ المَنْطِقِ
al-Manṭiq (the logic of Ibn al-Muqaffaʿ)
Ibn al-Muqaffaʿ · d. 142/759
This short compendium is the earliest surviving Arabic work on logic, from the time before the great Baghdad translations. It goes back to a Middle Persian (Pahlavi) source, itself dependent on the Syriac teaching of the Aristotelian logic, and its sources ascribe it either to ʿAbd Allāh Ibn al-Muqaffaʿ or to his son Muḥammad. It shows how the late-antique school logic first entered Arabic, before the technical vocabulary of the later translators had settled. A student reads it as a witness to the very beginning of manṭiq in Arabic, not as a textbook.
