شَرْحُ سُلَّمِ العُلُومِ

Sharḥ Sullam al-ʿulūm (Qāḍī Mubārak)

Qāḍī Mubārak · d. 1162/1749

The first of the great commentaries on Muḥibb Allāh al-Bihārī’s Sullam al-ʿulūm, known in the madrasas simply as ‘Qāḍī Mubārak’ or ‘al-Qāḍī’, with the author’s own notes (Minhuyāt). It covers the whole Sullam and is valued for its long discussions of epistemology and ontology; according to Asad Q. Ahmed it was finished in Delhi in 1143/1730 and draws on Mīr Dāmād’s al-Ufuq al-mubīn. It became one of the ‘gateway’ commentaries through which the Sullam was taught and was heavily glossed, among others by Faḍl-i Imām and Faḍl-i Ḥaqq Khayrābādī. TDV lists printings from Lucknow to Kazan, a sign that it was read well beyond India.
