Manṭiq Arisṭū (the Arabic Organon)
Isḥāq b. Ḥunayn, Abū Bishr Mattā et al. (translators) · d. 298/910
The Arabic Organon is the body of translations through which Muslim logicians read Aristotle: Porphyry's Isagoge, the Categories, De interpretatione, the Prior and Posterior Analytics, the Topics and the Sophistical Refutations, together with the Rhetoric and the Poetics, which the Arabic tradition counted as part of logic. The versions come from several hands of the ninth and tenth centuries; the Isagoge is attributed to Abū ʿUthmān al-Dimashqī, and the Posterior Analytics to Abū Bishr Mattā, working from the Syriac. The main witness is the Paris manuscript ar. 2346, a codex of the Baghdad Aristotelians going back to the copy of al-Ḥasan b. Suwār (Ibn al-Khammār), with variant versions and marginal notes from the school's teaching. It is the text behind al-Fārābī's commentaries and Ibn Sīnā's Shifāʾ, so a student who meets an Aristotelian term in the later manuals can trace it back here.
