مِعْيَارِ سَدَادْ

Miʿyār-ı Sedād

Ahmed Cevdet Paşa · d. 1312/1895

A short logic textbook in Ottoman Turkish that the statesman and scholar Ahmed Cevdet Paşa wrote for his son Ali Sedad, after whom it is named; TDV calls it the first Turkish logic book written in the traditional manner. It follows the usual plan: a preface, the conceptions (the five universals and definition), the assents in four sections (categorical propositions, the figures of the syllogism, modal propositions, and the kinds of premises), and a brief close on the five arts, each given a single sentence. The 1303 edition presents it as a book for the schools, and Hilmi Ziya Ülken judged it the most accomplished Turkish work on formal logic of its time. Because it keeps the Arabic technical terms, it shows how the madrasa vocabulary of logic passed into Turkish.
