Ṣughrā and Kubrā

al-Sayyid al-Sharīf al-Jurjānī · d. 816/1413

Two Persian introductions to logic ascribed to al-Jurjānī: the Ṣughrā, a short introductory handbook, and the longer Kubrā, which says more than the Īsāghūjī on the division of knowledge into conception and assent and attracted commentaries and versifications. An Arabic version by his son Nūr al-Dīn circulated as al-Ghurra, and a more literal translation as al-Risāla al-Waladiyya, written 'for his noble son'. In India both were read as shorter logic texts and drew super-commentaries. The attribution of the printed texts is not secure: El-Rouayheb takes the Lucknow print of 1872 as the true Ṣughrā and doubts that the Tehran 1956 text is by al-Jurjānī at all. The Mantiqi's Indian path teaches the two in that order, with the Persian text of the Ṣughrā from the Kanpur lithograph of 1279/1862–63.
