الحَاشِيَةُ عَلَى تَهْذِيبِ المَنْطِقِ

al-Ḥāshiya ʿalā Tahdhīb al-manṭiq

Mullā ʿAbd Allāh al-Yazdī · d. 981/1573 (Brockelmann: 1015/1606)

A commentary on the logic part of al-Taftāzānī’s Tahdhīb al-manṭiq, completed at Najaf in 967/1560 and known simply as ‘Ḥāshiya-yi Mullā ʿAbd Allāh’. After an introduction on the definition and subject of logic it follows the matn through conceptions (signification, the five universals, definition), assents (kinds of proposition, contradiction, conversion), the proof (the four figures, the kinds of syllogism, the five arts) and a closing section on the parts of the sciences and the ‘eight heads’. WikiShia records its use as a textbook in Iran, Iraq, Bahrain, Lebanon, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India, and it drew many glosses, among them al-Qisṭās al-mustaqīm of Muḥammad Ḥusayn Ardistānī and al-Zawāʾid al-jazīla of Riḍā Ṭabāṭabāʾī Tabrīzī. It is read both in Shiʿi seminaries and, as ‘Sharḥ-i Tahdhīb’, in the Sunni madrasas of South Asia.
