الرِّسَالَةُ الوَلَدِيَّةُ

al-Risāla al-Waladiyya

Saçaklızâde · d. 1145/1732

A short handbook of ādāb al-baḥth wa-l-munāẓara, the art of disputation that was taught beside logic in the Ottoman madrasa. Saçaklızâde first wrote a fuller work, Taqrīr al-qawānīn al-mutadāwala min ʿilm al-munāẓara, with his own commentary Taḥrīr al-Taqrīr, and then condensed it as al-Risāla al-Waladiyya, the form in which it became best known (TDV). Many scholars commented on it, Dāwūd-i Qarsī abridged it, and Serbestzâde Aḥmed Ḥamdī translated it into Ottoman Turkish as Mirʾāt-ı Münāẓara. It shows how the tools of logic (definition, the claim and its proof, objection) were put to use in regulated debate.
